42nd Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner Thursday, June 6, 2019

The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) hosts its 42nd Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Chelsea Piers in New York City. The Institute’s largest annual fundraiser, the Dinner draws support from all segments of the maritime industry, including shipowners and vessel operators, terminal operators, brokers and charterers, maritime finance and insurance, admiralty firms and inland transportation companies. Proceeds from the event support SCI’s programs serving mariners.

This year, SCI celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA). This international organization promotes and supports women in the maritime industry--especially in leadership and management roles--and has lived out this mission for over 40 years. WISTA actively supports the advancement of women in leadership roles and proudly serves its members by building a global relationship network to increase competency and encourage the sharing of best practices in more than 46 national associations.

RADM Philip H. Greene, Jr. will receive SCI's Lifetime Achievement Award for serving his country and the maritime community. RADM Greene’s active duty navy career spanned over 32-years during which he commanded two surface combatants, a destroyer squadron and a combined joint task force. A highly decorated Navy veteran, he went on to serve as the eleventh superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point. Greene finished his career as part of TOTE’s executive team, being named President & CEO in February 2013.

A special Lifesaving Award will be given posthumously to Kendall G. Chen for his work to rescue over 2,000 refugees in the 1980s and working to resettle them after the initial rescue at sea. Finding the Virgo, a documentary, explores his work and will be screened in NYC on June 4 at the Museum of Chinese in America.
